If the US had proper medical coverage do you think people would be getting medical advice from Yahoo Answers ?

People from Canada or Britain wouldn't be flocking to America for MRIs or whatnot if their wasn't so many open spaces from people being denied coverage or for-profit companies refusing to pay. At least I know that if I were to get sick, my family wouldn't have to mortgage their house to pay the medical bills.

To answer your question. People come to YA looking for comfort; if they're looking for a diagnosis, then they are serious fools, I have made many answers that said it is NEVER a good idea to self-diagnose.

At any rate, although I might sound like a socialist, or God forbid, a communist, there is no place for profit in something as necessary as medical care. Sewers and water are considered necessities in this society, why not health care?If the US had proper medical coverage do you think people would be getting medical advice from Yahoo Answers ?
I guess what is 'proper' medical coverage would need to be defined.

If proper medical coverage allowed people to go see a doctor when they were curious why their shampoo made their head itch. Or proper coverage payed for them to to go see the doctor to find out how to get rid of a love bite ( yes ive seen both of these in the he yahoo healthcare forum )

Then no they wouldnt be on Y/A asking for medical advice, they would be in the y/a personal finance or taxes forums trying to find out why their taxes are so high and why they are so broke. If the US had proper medical coverage do you think people would be getting medical advice from Yahoo Answers ?
If Canadian and French and British medical care was really good, do you think their rich people would still flock to America for their medical needs?

You do realize with socialized medicine, some paper pusher will decide if you're worth the treatment, right? If you're over a certain age and need an expensive treatment, you will be denied for the greater good of the collective. Get ready for the DMV type lines.

85% of America has health insurance coverage and access to the best medical care in the world. 15% (40 million) do not have insurance but still get emergency care if needed.

For this 15%, we're supposed to drag down the quality of care for the other 85%, AND make them pay for the other 15%.

Socialism at work.
I don't think Yahoo Answers is the proper place to ask for medical advice. There are numerous websites available for medical Informationn. I do not know if there is a link between a lack of medical coverage and questions of this nature being asked on Yahoo. Sometimes people just like additional opinions, or to hear from people with the same condition they have.
The US has fantastic medical coverage, and everyone can see a doctor if they choose - many choose not to because %26lt;gasp%26gt; practitioners (like anyone else doing a JOB) expect to be paid for their services. (Damn greedy bastards wanting to get paid for their work in a field that requires years and years of education!)

There are health clinics, walk in services, Medicaid, indigent funds, and the list goes on....People just wants everything for free! Nothing in life is free!

I consider my health insurance premiums to be a top priority bill in my home - right up there with mortgage and food -- it comes before my cars, my recreation, and anything else.

By the way - I'm a nurse, and even I will look up stuff online before toddling off to my doctor over it if I have questions. Seems really wasteful to go to a doctor every time I have a little crick in my neck or sniffle.
Yes they would because it would take much longer than it does now to get in to see a doctor.
By proper... do you mean if we could go to the doctor every time we get a boo boo and somebody else will pay for it?
Anyone who thinks that socialized medicine is a good option, has never experienced it.

People who live in Britain and Canada frequently pay to be treated by cutting edge US doctors because their government does not cover all procedures and often there is an extremely long waiting time for non-emergency procedures.

People likely ask for medical advice on the internet because they do not like visiting doctors or are too shy to ask a doctor a particular question, in person.

My guess is that proper care in your mind equates to free care or care paid for by other people's money.

BTW: there are free services available to the poor and emergency rooms treat anyone who comes in for an emergency procedure.

If the emergency room sends a bill and the person is low income or has no income, typically medicaid/medicare will pay the bill, if the patient can prove their financial status.

Medicaid or Medicare will not pay it, however, if you do have an income but prefer to spend your money on vacations or cosmetic surgery, or other non essential expenditures.
';You do realize with socialized medicine, some paper pusher will decide if you're worth the treatment, right? If you're over a certain age and need an expensive treatment, you will be denied for the greater good of the collective.';

Completely and utterly untrue. You get triaged, which means your needs get weight against the needs of others. People in socialized medicine settings DO NOT wait if they are having a heart attack....do NOT wait for cancer treatment or other critical care.

But if your jaw is messed up from a car wreck I have to wait for my nose job because....and wait for it....you need the plastic surgeon right now more than I do.

And, you know what? Even if what you just wrote was true (even though it ISN'T) We're already there....and you're not denied care because of some abstract social ';good'; your value as a human being and whether you live or die is based solely on your coverage....solely on your ability to pay.

Some guy at an HMO already decides if they're going to cover your cancer treatment or transplant ot not.

If you think THAT'S better???? Wow.
